Oregon Mini Geese Sebastopol and Regular

Natural Born Guardians is excited to announce that we are now rising Oregon Mini Geese in both Sebastopol and Regular feathered.

The Oregon Mini Geese started as a breeding project of Dave Holderread in Oregon. In 1985 he was given the idea to develop a Miniature breed of geese to replicate one that was bred and lost in Britain in 1940. Starting with a Tuffed Roman which was the smallest at the time. Later the Non Tuffed Roman and Shetland were added in for color.

Later a friend of his had a pair of wild Pacific White -Fronted Geese that average in weight from 4-7 pounds and lost his gander. A Shetland straight from the Island was mated to this Goose and these genetics remain in all the Mini Geese color and feather variations.

At some point later the genetics of a bloodline of inbred and very small Sebastopol geese were added in and is where the feather characteristic in the Mini’s comes from and is being selected for in the Sebastopol line.

As for the size of the Mini Geese lines the Goose can range from 4-7 pounds and the Gander from 7-10 pounds. Their size is comparable to Muscovy ducks. It was determined by Dave Holderread that selecting for much smaller resulted in a decreased vitality and survivability.

Egg production has been reported to range from half of the standard breeds comprised in their make-up to equal to them. Not that many will be destined for the table at this point but it is said that their breast to live weight percentage is even better than the standard size geese.

We will not be taking any deposits at this point but feel free to contact us next year for availability.
